Steel Door Locks and Security

4 posts

The security of a steel door begins, contrary to common belief, not with sheet thickness but with the lock configuration. However heavy the leaf, a door that throws a single bolt into a badly set strike plate is the weak link. Multi-point locks pull the leaf into the frame at three or five points; the grade of the cylinder decides its resistance to copying and forcing; electronic locks change how keys are managed but always need a mechanical fallback. The problems people actually meet come from the same place: a snapped key, a cylinder turning freely, a door that has become hard to close. Most of those are not lock failures at all but hinge and strike plate adjustment, and they are solved in place. The guides here compare lock types, walk through replacing a cylinder step by step, and set out how to get a stuck door open without damage.
