Fire Doors

9 posts

A fire door is not a thickened steel door. The mineral wool core inside the leaf, the intumescent seal set into the frame, the door closer and the lock hardware work together to hold flame and smoke back for a defined period, classified as EI 30, EI 60, EI 90 and EI 120. Which period is required follows the building's use and the regulation that covers it, not the buyer's preference. On an escape route the lever handle gives way to a panic bar and the door opens in the direction of escape; those two details are the first things an inspection looks at. The standard size is a 90×200 cm frame opening with a 104×208 cm finished trim size. The guides here run the whole life of a fire door, from resistance ratings and hardware choice through measuring to the periodic inspection that follows installation.

Fire Resistant Doors: What Determines Performance

Fire resistance is not a property of one material but of how core, frame, seals, glazing and installation behave together. What each component contributes and where assemblies fail.

Emergency Exit Door Features That Matter

An emergency exit door has one job: open fast. How panic hardware, swing direction, clear width, visibility, thresholds and closers serve that, and what slows people down.

What Is a Fire Door? Where It Differs

A fire door is an assembly designed to delay fire and smoke passing from one compartment to another. How leaf, frame, seals, closer and hardware work as one system.

Fire Door Installation: Common Site Mistakes

A fire door only performs as installed. Escape direction, frame fixing, closer adjustment, panic bar height and gap tolerances - the site errors that quietly cancel a certified door.

Fire Door Handle Versus Panic Bar

A lever handle and a panic bar do not do the same job. One needs a deliberate movement; the other is designed to release under the body pressure of a crowd.

How to Measure for a Fire Door

Fire doors allow less dimensional freedom because the rating depends on a tested fixing detail. Correct measurement means wall section, finished floor level and door hand together.

Fire Door Certification Explained

A fire door certificate belongs to a tested assembly, not to a leaf. Leaf, frame, hinges, lock, seals and installation are tested together, and substituting a part voids the claim.
