A surface family, not a door type

"Laminox" appears in door specifications as though it were a product, but it names a surface rather than a door — one of several trade names for laminate-based hard coatings on steel doors. The useful question is not whether a door is laminox, but which surface family it carries and how that family behaves.

How a laminate surface is built

Laminate is a hard sheet formed by bonding resin-impregnated paper layers under heat and pressure. The top layer carries the decor and the wear resistance; the layers beneath give thickness and strength. On a door, this sheet is bonded to the steel leaf or to an intermediate carrier on the leaf.

The result is noticeably harder than a foil finish: it does not flex under a fingertip, resists a fingernail, and does not polish up where the handle touches. That hardness sets its limit too — a rigid sheet will not wrap deep carved relief, where flexible membrane performs better.

Membrane, laminate, ultralam and print

  • PVC membrane: thin, flexible foil drawn onto the leaf under vacuum. Follows pattern depth, offers the widest range of colours and textures, feels softer, and marks when struck by something sharp.
  • Laminate-based hard surfaces: thicker and harder, with high scratch resistance and a firm feel. Best on flat and shallow-embossed faces.
  • Ultralam surfaces: another branch of the hard-surface family, favoured for matt textured finishes. Our ultralam steel doors use them widely in marble and timber textures.
  • Digital print: the pattern printed directly, giving the most realistic veining but no physical relief.

None of these is absolutely better than the others. The choice follows where the door stands and how deep the pattern is.

Moisture, heat and edges

The practical weak point of hard surfaces is the edge. The sheet covers the face; how it is terminated at the leaf edge determines whether moisture can work underneath. An edge that is not properly banded will lift over time, so on hard-surfaced doors the edge detail matters as much as the surface.

Temperature is the second issue. In direct sun the steel body and the surface layer expand at different rates, so exposed positions need an exterior-rated surface family and, where possible, a canopy. This matters more for hot, humid destinations than in a stair hall, where hard surfaces last for years.

Cleaning and repair

Hard laminate surfaces are easy to maintain: a damp cloth, mild detergent where needed. Avoid abrasive cream, steel wool, acetone and thinner — they dull or polish the decor layer and the mark cannot be undone. Steam cleaners stress the edge banding.

Be realistic about repair: a deep scratch can be disguised with a touch-up pen but not removed. Dark textured finishes are more forgiving around the handle and lower edge, so if you specify white steel doors, consider a kick plate or a textured surface there.

The leaf under the surface

One detail gets overlooked with hard surfaces: however good the laminate, an uneven leaf beneath it produces an uneven door. Where the steel face waves slightly, raking light makes that wave more obvious under a rigid sheet, while flexible membrane absorbs small irregularities. Leaf flatness is therefore a separate inspection item on laminate-finished doors.

The same applies to bonding. Voids between sheet and leaf feel hollow under a palm and eventually lift. Running your hand across a sample panel finds those voids before your eye does.

Choosing between them

  1. Decorative apartment door with deep carved relief: membrane carries the pattern better.
  2. Heavily used entrance or office door: hard laminate surfaces resist scratching.
  3. You want to feel marble or timber texture by hand: textured hard surfaces deliver that; flat print does not.
  4. Door facing outdoors: suitability of the surface family comes first, pattern second.

Surface choice affects price directly, so the same pattern is quoted differently across families.
