The phrase melamine door is often used as a synonym for budget door, but melamine is a surface technology rather than a price bracket. Printed decor paper is impregnated with melamine resin and fused to a board under heat and pressure. The paper and resin end up as one surface with the panel, not a film held on with adhesive.

How the surface is made

Melamine facing is created at the board mill, not the door workshop. A particleboard or MDF panel enters the press with decor paper laid on it, and under heat and pressure the resin melts, cures and fuses the paper to the board. The texture of the press plate transfers to the surface: a flat plate gives gloss, a textured plate gives a matt finish imitating open timber pores. What reaches a door workshop is already faced board; the work there is cutting, edging and hanging.

Strengths and weaknesses

  • Scratch resistance: the cured resin layer is hard and resists daily wear.
  • Stain resistance: non-porous, so pen and grease marks do not soak in.
  • Colour consistency: being printed, the same decor code stays consistent between batches.
  • Pattern repeat: wood-look decors repeat at fixed intervals, which shows on large surfaces.
  • Repair: local repair is not possible; a damaged panel is replaced.
  • Form: suitable for flat panels only, not for deep carving or embossing.

Where it belongs

Melamine's main territory is interiors: room doors, wardrobe fronts, kitchen and bathroom furniture. It is not used as the external face of a steel entrance door, because the carrier board is particleboard or MDF and the edges can take up moisture. It is common on the inner face though, with composite or membrane outside and a melamine panel inside. That build gives a cleanable, scratch-resistant interior face that matches the room doors in tone. Light melamine interiors brighten narrow hallways, and the combination is often requested with our white steel doors.

Melamine, laminate and membrane

These three terms get mixed up constantly. Melamine is resin-impregnated decor paper fused directly to the board, not a separate sheet. Laminate is made the same way with more layers and higher pressure as an independent plate, then bonded to the panel, and is markedly more durable. Membrane is PVC foil formed by heat and the easiest to shape over three-dimensional detail. Durability runs roughly laminate, melamine, membrane; pattern flexibility runs the other way round. Choose by whether the face is flat or shaped and by the load the door will see.

Edges

The cut edge is the vulnerable point. An unfaced edge takes up moisture and the board swells, so edges are closed with ABS or PVC banding, and in better work with laser or hot-air bonding that leaves no visible glue line. The bottom edge matters most because that is where floor-cleaning water splashes; leaving it unbanded is a common cost saving and the first place trouble appears.

Cleaning and ordering

A damp soft cloth and neutral detergent are enough. Abrasive powders and wire pads dull the surface, and solvent cleaners can fade the decor print. Gloss melamine shows fingerprints more than matt and textured versions. If you want a melamine inner face, state the decor code, the surface texture and the edge banding type with your order, and send a sample or code if you are matching existing room doors. The external face is chosen by exposure, and sun- or rain-facing entrances move to composite door surfaces. Send openings in centimetres with the finish you want on each face and we will quote to your sizes, crated and loaded in Istanbul.
