Starting in the wrong order costs money
Most buyers open a catalogue, stop at a pattern and start there — an understandable reflex and the wrong end of the process. Pattern should be last, because any pattern can be built at any size, in any surface, with any lock. Size, application and construction constrain each other.
The right order runs: where the door goes, then the size, then leaf and lock construction, then the surface family, and only then pattern and colour. Work that way and most of your budget lands where the door actually performs rather than where it photographs.
First: the application
This sets both the technical expectation and the price band. An apartment entrance is about resistance to forced entry, acoustic performance and fitting the hallway. A building entrance is about heavy use, leaf weight and closer selection. A villa entrance is governed by exposure — sun, rain, temperature swing. An escape route follows an entirely different hardware logic.
Settle here what each face sees. Interior to interior leaves the surface choice open; one face outdoors makes UV and moisture behaviour the first question, and for hot or coastal destinations it decides the surface family.
Second: the size
Fixing dimensions early simplifies everything after it. Standard references: apartment doors 90 × 200 cm clear and about 108 × 210 cm overall; building entrance and villa doors 145 × 215 cm clear and about 165 × 223 cm overall; fire doors 90 × 200 cm clear and about 104 × 208 cm overall.
Close to these figures you buy from standard production and ship sooner. Further away, the door is made to measure, with the pattern rescaled and the lock axis repositioned.
Third: leaf and frame construction
- Core: polyurethane favours thermal performance, mineral wool favours acoustics and fire resistance. Honeycomb announces itself with a drum-like knock.
- Leaf thickness: affects both acoustics and thermal behaviour, and raises weight, which changes hinge count.
- Frame depth: set by wall thickness. Adjustable 20–24 cm frames give flexibility on entrance doors.
- Gasket: unbroken around the leaf and seated in a channel. This is the invisible half of acoustic performance.
- Single or double leaf: wide openings work best as asymmetric doubles — a main leaf for daily use, a second for furniture.
Fourth: lock and hardware
Configuration before brand. Three questions cover it: how many directions do the bolts throw, how deep do they enter the frame, and are there security pins on the hinge side? Reinforced keep plates matter as much as the lock case itself.
Hinge type is a decision too: visible ball-bearing hinges adjust easily and suit heavy leaves, concealed hinges disappear when closed but adjust less. Choose lever, escutcheon and viewer with the model.
Fifth: the surface family
Surface decides how the door wears. Membrane carries deep relief with the widest colour range; hard laminate and ultralam resist scratching; digital print gives realistic veining without physical relief. Hard-surfaced groups such as ultralam steel doors suit heavily used entrances.
Decide colour from a sample, not a photograph. Print and screens show dark tones darker and whites brighter than they are. For export orders, ask for a physical chip and tell us the destination climate before confirming.
Sixth: pattern and colour
By this point the list has narrowed itself. Glazing alone halves it — in the glazed villa steel doors range, glazed area and grille style define the model. Specify the inside face as well, since it belongs to the hallway and can usually be chosen independently. For a lighter, texture-led look, composite doors reach a similar effect through a different construction.
Four mistakes that waste budget
- Money on the surface, savings on the lock: spending everything on what shows and finishing with thin keeps.
- Guessing dimensions: a centimetre decides whether the door enters the opening.
- Approving colour without a sample: the tone you liked on screen looks different in a stair hall.
- Leaving hardware until later: lever, viewer and lock configuration are set in production.
