One difference, many consequences
A hinged door hangs from one edge of the frame along the hinge line. A pivot door turns between two points, top and bottom, with the axis set inside the leaf width, usually 10 to 25 cm in from the edge. The definition ends there; the consequences start there.
With the axis set in, part of the leaf swings out while part swings in. A pivot door therefore never frees the whole opening: the section behind the axis narrows the clear passage. In exchange, the leaf weight sits on a floor bearing and a top pin rather than on a hinge line.
What a pivot makes possible
First, scale. Because the weight is carried on a vertical axis, very wide and heavy leaves still open with reasonable effort. Where 145 cm is the practical limit for a hinged leaf, a pivot can go wider and thicker. That is why stone-faced, thick-cored, monumental entrances are usually pivots.
Second, appearance. No hinge shows at the edge, and the leaf sits in the frame behind a thin, even shadow gap. For a modern front with continuous joint lines and little visible detail, a pivot gives that cleanly.
Third, the feel of it. A well adjusted pivot leaf moves under one finger despite its mass, which changes daily life on a heavy entrance.
What a pivot costs
Sealing is where the system gives ground. Because the leaf rotates about an internal axis, the gasket cannot run as one unbroken line around the leaf, and continuity suffers around the axis itself. On an exposed entrance, or where heating load matters, you notice it.
Floor preparation is the second issue. The bottom bearing is recessed into the floor and has to be dead level. If its position and level are not planned before the screed goes down, correcting it afterwards is awkward. A hinged frame has no such dependency; it fixes to the wall, not the floor.
Third, locking logic changes. A hinged door throws bolts into the frame and carries security pins on the hinge side. A pivot needs its locking points rearranged around the axis geometry, which makes a multipoint lock a requirement rather than an upgrade.
Finally, service. Hinge adjustment takes a fitter a few minutes on site. Adjusting a pivot bearing depends on the system and is not always as quick.
Where the hinged villa door is stronger
The hinged system is the more mature answer for sealing. The gasket runs as a continuous frame around the leaf, a bottom seal works at the threshold, and bolts catch the frame at several points. In a cold region or an exposed position that advantage is real.
Flexibility is second. Wide openings split into two leaves, side lights and transoms extend the composition, and the pattern can be laid out around the division. The variety in our glazed villa steel doors comes from exactly that freedom.
Third is cost and service. At standard sizes a hinged villa door is quicker to build and easier to find parts for.
Which entrance takes which
- Opening up to 145 cm, ordinary wall: a hinged villa door handles it comfortably.
- Wide opening and a single monumental leaf: pivot.
- Exposed, cold, heating load matters: hinged.
- Continuous joints and no visible hinges wanted: pivot.
- Screed poured, floor finished, no chance to cut in: hinged.
- Heavy leaf with stone or thick facing: pivot.
Measuring the two systems
For a hinged door the rough opening and the wall thickness are enough. A pivot adds two figures: the finished floor level where the bearing lands, and how far the axis sits in from the leaf edge. That offset determines the clear passage, so a 120 cm leaf with a 20 cm offset leaves roughly 100 cm to walk through. Working that number out early prevents the disappointment that otherwise arrives on installation day.
The order of decisions
Start with the exposure of the entrance: wind, cold, rain. Then fix the clear passage you need. Third, check the floor; a finished screed makes the pivot route harder. Leave appearance to last, because the first three usually settle the matter on their own. Send the opening sizes and the floor condition and we will work out which system fits before quoting; compositions from building entrance doors and luxury steel doors adapt to either system.
